Our Services

General Services

  • BATHING

Treat your pet to a luxurious bath. Our special, cleansing baths remove dirt, debris and that doggie pet odor – your pet will feel fresh and revitalized. If scratching is a problem, one of our veterinarians can help to determine if the cause is a dermatitis, allergies or another type of skin infection and prescribe a medicated bath that contains soothing agents that stop the itching. Services also include nail trim and ear cleaning.

Remember, pets should be bathed with a high quality shampoo at least once a month.

  • BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE

Illness doesn't always have a physical cause.  We can recommend trained animal behaviorists who help determine the cause of such disorders as separation anxiety, aggression and obsessive behavior, and then develop a treatment regimen for the client.  If further consultation is required, we also have the ability to refer more difficult cases to Cornell University's Animal Behavior Clinic.

  • BIRDS, REPTILES, RABBITS AND SMALL MAMMALS

Veterinary medicine for exotic pets is growing as the popularity of these animals increase. With better public education in health, nutritional and environmental management, all species have a greater chance for living longer and healthier lives. Dr. Marla Lender and Dr. Dana Klaiber both have extensive knowledge and experience with many species of avian and exotic pets. We offer comprehensive physical examinations, nutritional and environmental counseling, vaccinations, internal medicine and surgical care for your avian and exotic pets.

  • BOARDING

Pets are like our children – we feed, nurture and lavish attention on them. Our highly qualified Animal Caretakers do the same when you can't be there. We provide tender loving care (such as brushing and cuddling), and supervised outdoor time to keep them happy and active.

  • COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE

Dr. Clegg has completed an extensive and rigorous training program to become certified in acupuncture. Once certified, Dr. Clegg will be one of only a handful of veterinarians in the Central New York area qualified to provide acupuncture therapy to pets.

Acupuncture has been successfully used in human and animal medicine for many years. Acupuncture is effective in areas of pain management, and as an alternative therapy for many diseases.  Dr. Clegg completed his coursework in 2002 and passed comprehensive written and practical exams. With one more phase of training left, he hopes to be certified soon.

  • DENTAL CARE

Regular, professional dental care is important to maintaining your pet's teeth. We use modern and safe ultrasound to clean each tooth thoroughly - above and below the gum line. Dental technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface that is more resistant to plaque buildup. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity. As pets cannot be instructed to "open wide" and "hold still" it is essential that they are anesthetized during a dental procedure. As with all anesthetic procedures, the patient is carefully monitored with the latest equipment, such as a pulse oximeter and an ECG.  We always recommend pre-anesthetic blood screening and intravenous fluids to ensure a safe procedure and speedy recovery.

  • EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE

In any emergency, seconds count. Our experienced staff is backed up by our resuscitation capabilities, equipped to administer the ABCs of basic life support – Airway, Breathing, Circulation/Cardiac compressions. Emergency care is offered during regular business hours.

In addition, we are fortunate to have the services of two emergency clinics for after hour emergency care.  The Veterinary Medical Center of Central New York at 2612 Erie Boulevard East in Syracuse can be reached at (315) 446-7933.  The Veterinary Medical Center is a 24-hour facility, seven days a week.  The Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center at 2115 Downer Street Road in Baldwinsville can be reached at (315) 638-3500.  Their hours of operation are Monday–Thursday 7pm–8am and Friday 7pm – Monday 8am.

  • ENDOSCOPY

High-tech fiber optics permit direct visual examination and biopsies of your pet’s gastrointestinal system. This flexible instrument allows for accurate, less invasive diagnosis and treatment of oral, esophageal, stomach and colon disease. Foreign objects can also be removed without the need for surgery. With the addition of the rigid attachment, we are also able to offer advanced diagnostics and treatment of avian and exotic patients, as well as nasal and aural (ear) problems in dogs and cats.

  • FULLY STOCKED PHARMACY

We stock a wide range of the best veterinary drugs available in the animal healthcare field.  Our doctors can assure you that any prescription medication you purchase from us has been inspected and approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and has been manufactured and packaged in the United States according to government regulations.

Often, our clients ask us about obtaining their pet's medications through catalogs and internet pharmacies.  We do not recommend purchasing such medicines through these sources.

Please ask us about the pharmacy services we can provide!

  • HOSPICE/EUTHANASIA SERVICES

Saying goodbye to a long-time friend is painful. We work with clients to ensure their pet's comfort and dignity. Services include care of the remains as requested by the client.

  • IMMUNIZATION AND WELLNESS CARE

We strive to prevent illness whenever possible. The time and effort invested in Wellness Programs has rewards for both pets and owners. Our Wellness Programs are designed specifically for your pet and include: Comprehensive physical examination; internal parasite check; heartworm and flea control; vaccination program; spay and neuter package; and specialized blood tests for all life stages.

  • INTERNAL MEDICINE

We cover all areas of internal medicine, including: Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Oncology, and Endocrinology, among others. We utilize technology such as ultrasound and endoscopy to offer advanced diagnostics and treatment in as non-invasive a manner as possible.  With a well-equipped, in-house laboratory and a fully stocked pharmacy, we are able to provide excellent care to our patients.

  • MICROCHIPPING

Microchips have helped reunite thousands of pets with their families. We recommend the Home Again Microchip Identification System, which can be read by the universal scanner used by thousands of veterinarians, animal shelters and animal control agencies in the United States.  All pets should be microchipped at the time of their spay/neuter and breeding dogs should be microchipped for their safety and security.  OFA, the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, requires that all dogs being certified through their organization also be microchipped.  Also, Home Again has launched a new program offering even more services to speed the recovery of a lost pet.  Ask a member of our health care team for more information.

  • NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING

Some pets require special food, and all pets benefit from a balanced diet. It has been shown that pets fed a premium diet live an average of 2 years longer than those that are not.  Ask one of our veterinarians to recommend the right diet for your pet to keep him or her happy, healthy and active.

  • PAIN MANAGEMENT

Veterinary patients feel pain and discomfort under the same circumstances as people do. We know that recognizing and alleviating pain in animals is the essence of good patient care. We utilize various forms of pain management before, during and after procedures, injuries and illnesses.

  • RADIOLOGY

Radiology – or x-rays – help our veterinarians evaluate muscular-skeletal, cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, reproductive and urinary systems. After initial evaluation by our veterinarians, all x-rays are sent to a Board Certified Radiologist for analysis and diagnostic input. The radiologist then follows up with a  comprehensive written report for the patient file and future reference.

See before and after radiographs of a Bald Eagle that we assisted in rehabilitation during the summer of 2001. The eagle was released and is doing well.

  • SURGERY

We offer the most advanced surgical techniques and technology. All patients are carefully evaluated for safety, and anesthetics are specifically tailored to your pet. Surgical services and facilities include: Complete preanesthetic bloodwork, intravenous catheterization and fluids, fully trained veterinary and licensed technical staff to ensure the safest, most efficient, state-of-the-art procedures for your pet; heated surgery tables for greater comfort; advanced sterilization techniques; ECG and oxygen saturation monitors; intensive after surgery care and pain management.

  • ULTRASOUND

This non-invasive, state-of-the-art technology uses sound waves to painlessly examine specific internal organs, primarily the heart and abdominal organs. Ultrasound is also utilized by our veterinarians, as in human medicine, as a visual guide for obtaining fluid from the pericardial sac, bladder, chest and abdominal cavity, as well as ultrasound guided biopsies. As with our x-rays, all our diagnostic ultrasounds are sent out to a Board Certified Radiologist to be evaluated. A report is then obtained for the patient file, and the findings are discussed with the pet's owner to decide a course of action for treatment.
